Description

A pair of buildings on Broad Street, Newent, originally two houses, now arranged as garage offices, showrooms, and flats. The buildings date from the 18th century, with alterations in the 19th century (No. 20) and the mid-19th century (No. 18). No. 18 is rendered to resemble ashlar, with a tiled roof, while No. 20 has Flemish bond brickwork, rusticated stone quoins, and a slate roof.

No. 18 is three windows wide, with two storeys and attics. No. 20 is five windows wide, with three storeys and an "L" plan. The ground floor of No. 20 has three large 20th-century windows on the left side, a central doorway, and two sash windows on the right, all set within a rendered wall with a moulded plinth. These are all concealed behind a contemporary shop fascia. The first floor of No. 18 features three sash windows, each with two panes, beneath stone lintels with a tapering chamfer. Wide eaves are present with paired brackets. A two-light casement window sits within a gabled dormer on the left side, and a brick chimney rises from the eaves between the windows on the right. The first floor of No. 20 has five sash windows with stone sills, flat rubbed-brick arches with projecting stone keystones, and paler bricks to the window jambs. The second floor of No. 20 mirrors the first floor, but with sash windows containing six panes. A moulded stone coping defines the parapet. Brick gable chimneys are present.

The right return side shows the outline of an earlier two-storey house and attic with a steeper roof, descending to lower rear eaves, and possibly indicating a rear wing. The eaves of this return were later raised. No. 18 is included in the listing primarily for its group value.
