Description
This is an early 18th-century bank built of Flemish bond brickwork with rusticated stone quoins, topped with a tiled roof. It is five windows wide and two rooms deep, with a symmetrical facade where the central section projects slightly. A doorway, raised four stone steps, has paired doors with four fielded panels, a semi-circular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars, and a moulded surround culminating in a keystone. Roman Doric fluted columns are attached either side of the doorway, with plain Doric pilasters behind. A Doric architrave and frieze runs across the columns and pilasters, topped by an open pediment with mutules. Ground floor sash windows, with single-pane sashes and flat, rubbed brick arches, are located on either side of the doorway, with weight boxes flush to the brickwork. The first floor features a central Venetian window with sashes, the central pane being four panes wide. Two sash windows flank the Venetian window, all with thick glazing bars and rubbed brick arches. A modillion eaves cornice runs around the building, rising to form a pediment in the centre, which contains a Diocletian window and a cartouche above. There are hipped dormers on each side, with modillion eaves and two-light casement windows. Square brick chimneys are located behind the ridge on each gable. The roof also features a small, central valley. Inside, the ground floor has panelled shutters and the Venetian window is accompanied by its original paneling. The front room on the right contains some panelling, and a semi-circular headed cupboard in the gable wall, with separate top and bottom panelled doors, a false keystone, and flanked by fluted Doric pilasters. The staircase features fluted newels, spiral balusters, a swept moulded handrail, and matching dado panelling. A semi-circular headed window, six panes wide, is present on the rear stairs. A modillion plaster cornice runs from the front to the back of the house from the landing. A panelled seat has been placed below the Venetian window. Six-panel doors lead off the landing.
