Description

Harwood House is a house dating from the early to mid-17th century, with alterations likely made in the early 19th century. The facade features rough render, while the plinth is finished in plain render, and the roof is tiled. The right gable displays brick-nogged timber-framing, with weatherboarding above. The building has an L-shaped plan, is two storeys tall with attics, and consists of two rooms deep.

The central front door is accessed by a single stone step and is half-glazed with marginal lights above two flush panels, topped by a plain rectangular fanlight. The door is framed by a moulded surround with consoles and shaped brackets supporting an open pediment. To the right, there is a 20th-century three-light mullion and transom window with a flat head, and below it is a boarded cellar opening. On the left side, there is a 21-pane shop window set between pilasters at ground level, featuring a flat top with brackets, a deep fascia, and weatherboarding. A boarded door leads to a side passage and has a steep segmental head.

On the first floor, there are three-light mullion and transom windows with flat heads above each ground floor window, along with a small four-pane window over the side entry. The eaves are moulded timber, and there are two hipped dormers with three lights, iron opening casements, and leaded lights. A large chimney is located at the angle with the rear wing, and there is a lean-to at the rest of the rear. A plain brick chimney rises from the eaves at the right end of the front.

Internally, the ground floor features heavy chamfers on the ceiling beams and a large ashlar base to the chimney. The staircase has splat balusters, which have likely been repositioned. The roof consists of two long bays with a cut tie-beam truss. The front wall of the attic reveals exposed timber-framing, with square panels and panels featuring multiple diagonal timbers. Originally, this was a large timber-framed house that has been later refronted.
