Description
5 and 5A Somerset Place is a mid-19th century building consisting of three houses with shops on a corner site, featuring offices above. The structure is made of painted stucco with painted freestone dressings and has a slate roof that is hipped at the corner, with stacks on the party walls.
The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with attics. It has nine bays in total: five bays on Bank Street, three on Somerset Place, and one at the corner. The facade is enhanced by pilasters with moulded caps that support an entablature and parapet. The attic features various 20th-century dormers. The second floor includes three/six sash windows with moulded architraves and a continuous sill band. The first floor has six/nine sash windows beneath moulded cornices on consoles, with the corner bay windows set in curved frames. Some windows over the party wall on Bank Street and the left second floor window are blind. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts. The interior has not been inspected.
This building is listed for being a good example of a mid-19th century terrace on a corner plot, with well-preserved facades that retain their sash windows, moulded architraves, sill bands, and pilasters.
