Description

45 Teign Street is a house with a shop that has been converted into a café. It dates from the early 18th century and was refronted with a shop front in the early 19th century. The building is finished in painted stucco over red sandstone rubble, topped with a slate roof, and has a double-depth plan.

The exterior features three storeys and a two-window range. The original entrance, which was part of the early 19th-century shop front on Teign Street, has been replaced with a 20th-century door located on the right return in Stanley Street, inserted into a former external stack that has an attic jettied above. The right return also includes 20th-century windows, doors, and tile-hung cladding on the first floor. The front of the building displays six-over-six pane sash windows, with two on the first floor and one on the left side of the second floor, accompanied by a small 20th-century window on the right. The early 19th-century shop front bows to the left and features a moulded cornice above the fascia, with two three-pane shop windows separated by lamb's tongue glazing bars, and former doors positioned in the centre and to the right.

Inside, the building has been altered, but it retains a spiral staircase located in the centre of the right return, one early 18th-century thin two-panel door, and a thin planked door leading to the attic. The rear wall on the second floor is believed to be lath and plaster with cob below. The rubblestone front wall is exposed on the interior and measures approximately 0.8 meters thick.
