Description
The Copperhouse Gift Shop is a house with two shopfronts, dating from the 18th century. The ground floor was converted to shops in the 19th century. The front is finished in stucco, and it has a grouted scantle slate roof with a brick chimney over the left gable end and an adjoining party wall on the right. The building has a double depth plan with two wide rooms at the front flanking an entrance hall. The left room features a small former shop window in what is likely the original opening, while the right room has a wide 19th-century double shopfront and is still in use as a shop.
The building is two storeys high and was originally probably a symmetrical three-window front with a central doorway and wide window openings. Currently, it has a small window from around the late 19th or early 20th century with transoms and scroll-headed lights, along with a complete late 19th-century double shopfront with a central doorway on the right. This shopfront features basket-arched lights with pierced spandrels, a glazed door with an overlight, terminal pilasters with consoles, and a fascia topped with a dentilled cornice. The main doorway has a 20th-century door. Above the doorway is an original 18th-century Venetian style tripartite sash window, which includes thick glazing bars on the hornless sashes and a central round arched head with traceried glazing. The first-floor windows on either side are square-headed tripartite sashes, possibly also from the 18th century, but with the glazing bars removed. The 18th-century Venetian style sash window is the only one of its design found in this area of West Cornwall during the survey.
