Description
No 1, formerly known as Copperhouse Market House, is a market house built in 1839, now used as offices. The building features a stuccoed front with dressed granite rustications and has a grouted scantle slate hipped roof with wide eaves. It has cast-iron ogee-section gutters. The rectangular plan likely originally included two main rooms at the front, flanking a wide central entrance hall that leads to a stair hall. The front rooms were later fitted with shopfronts, which were replaced in the 20th century with masonry and windows in their original positions. There are later additions at the rear.
The exterior is symmetrical with five windows on the north front, featuring a wide central elliptically-arched doorway. The building has an ashlar plinth, ashlar quoin pilasters, and an ashlar doorway with granite voussoirs and rusticated jambstones. There is a first-floor sill band and a square granite eaves cornice. The doors and hood are from the 20th century. The ground floor has mid-20th century two-pane horned sashes in 20th-century replica openings, while the first floor retains original openings. The interior has not been inspected.
