Description

A pair of houses at Hayle Market Street, built circa late 18th or early 19th century, originally serving as the office of the Cornish Copper Company. The buildings are constructed from painted rubble and copper slag blocks, with some slate hanging. The steep roof is covered with grouted scantle slate on one half (No. 10), and asbestos slate on the other half. Brick chimneys rise above the gable ends, with a large external chimney breast on the left-hand side. A cast-iron ogee gutter is present at the front left.

Internally, the plan features a double depth layout with a pair of entrance halls positioned to the left of the middle, between two front rooms. Behind these are pairs of stair halls, with service rooms at the rear on both the left and right sides. Later lean-to additions have been made to the rear right, and a small 20th-century addition extends from the rear left of the middle.

The north-east front is nearly symmetrical, with three windows and two doorways to the left of the middle. No. 10 has an old six-panel door with later glazed top panels, while No. 9 features a 20th-century door. The left-hand windows are circa late 19th century four-pane sashes, with other windows being 20th-century replacements within original openings. The rear of No. 10 retains older sashes, including an original 16-pane hornless sash on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.

The Cornish Copper Company, established in 1755, played a pivotal role in the development of Hayle for over a century, shaping the area now known as Copperhouse.
