Description

J and F Pool Ltd is a former office for the Copperhouse Foundry of The Cornish Copper Company, built around 1775. The building features a painted stuccoed front, while the rest is made of painted copper slag blocks. It has a steep half-hipped roof covered with asbestos slate and cast-iron ogee gutters.

The layout consists of a double depth plan with a narrow front room on the left and a wider front room on the right, both flanking an entrance hall that leads to a stair hall between the rear service rooms. The right-hand front room may have originally served as a shop, indicated by its layout.

The exterior is two stories high with a three-window north front, which may have originally been symmetrical with a central doorway. The current doorway is positioned left of center, with two windows to its right that may have replaced a former shopfront. These openings feature a 20th-century door and likely 20th-century 12-pane horned sashes. The other windows have early 19th-century 12-pane hornless sashes. At the rear, there is a central stair window with an early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash.

The Cornish Copper Company was established in 1755 by a group of prominent entrepreneurs and played a significant role in the development of the port of Hayle, particularly in the area known as Copperhouse.
