Description

Offices, now used as a store, dating from the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of painted shale rubble with dressed granite quoins, sills, and lintels. It has a low-pitched roof that is hidden from view.

The structure is rectangular in plan and was originally divided into small rooms for offices, featuring a full-width narrow reception room at the front (north) and three equal rooms at the rear, connected by a passage between the left and middle rooms. It was originally two storeys high and has symmetrical north and west fronts. The north front features a wide central doorway that was widened in the mid to late 19th century, with an elliptical arched cast iron beam inserted above. This beam bears an inscription in relief reading "PERRAN FOUNDRY" with the Cornish shield as the keystone, and the date 1791 above it. The flanking windows on both the ground and first floors have been blocked. The west front has three windows, with 20th-century windows on the ground floor and a blocked window above.

This building was part of the Perran Iron Foundry, founded in 1791, which was the most significant foundry in Cornwall during its peak, known for manufacturing some of the largest beam engines ever constructed. The building, located near the center of the complex, likely served as the administrative hub and retains many original openings, along with the impressive iron beam that showcases the quality and scale of work previously conducted here.
