Description

The Dry Sand shop and Green Sand shop are mould and casting buildings from the early to mid-19th century, now used as a store. They feature painted shale rubble walls and brick arches. The main building, known as the Dry Sand shop, has a grouted scantle slate roof with a weather-boarded upper half on the west gable. The adjoining Green Sand shop has a clay pantile roof, while a stove extension at the west is covered in corrugated asbestos.

The layout consists of three roughly rectangular buildings. The Dry Sand shop includes spaces for furnaces at both the east and west ends, with two later stacks on the north side. The narrower single-storey Sand Shop is located at the east, and a much narrower two-storey stove extension is at the west, attached to the south side of the main building's gable. Originally, there was a water wheel on the south side of the Dry Sand shop. The building stands two storeys high, with large round-headed arches on the north and west walls that were originally furnace entrances, except for the central doorway on the west. Some arches are blocked or obscured by later additions. The west gable end has two first-floor openings that likely once held windows, while the first floor of the stove extension retains four of the original seven openings, which are spanned by granite lintels. The original ground floor openings have been blocked.

Inside, the building features original king post roof structures and shows much evidence of its former industrial use. This site was part of the Perran Iron Foundry, established in 1791, which was the most significant foundry in Cornwall during its peak, known for manufacturing some of the largest beam engines ever built. The Dry Sand shop served as the main furnace building, which would have been both hot and hazardous in the 19th century. Despite some alterations, including the removal of some stove projections, the building remains impressive and largely intact.
