Description
Smiths Shop is a ruin dating from the early 19th century. It features shale rubble walling with granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels. Originally, it was a large rectangular building that adjoined the Loam Shop and Moulding Shop to the west, both of which have since been removed, with the Green Sand Shop to the south. The outer walling is still standing, with a complete section along the north side. The building once housed a water-powered hammer mill and had a further water wheel beside the south wall, with much evidence of its former use still visible in the surviving walling.
The structure is two storeys high. The north wall includes two original doorways and an original vertical glazed window above the right-hand doorway. Inside the wall, there are stone piers at each bay.
Smiths Shop was part of the Perran Iron Foundry, which was established in 1791 and became the most significant foundry in Cornwall during its peak, known for manufacturing some of the largest beam engines ever constructed.
