Description

No 1 Riverside is a house in a terrace, dating from the late 18th century, with an extension added to the left in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted rubble and features weatherboard cladding on the first floor of the original section. It has a steep scantle slate roof with a hipped dormer at the front, and a brick chimney on the gable end to the left, adjoining No 2 on the right. The later extension has a slate roof with a lower pitch and is at a lower level. The house has cast iron ogee gutters.

The layout includes a large parlour at the front, with a cross passage on the right and a service room behind. The early 19th-century extension on the left adds a further reception room at the front and another service room behind. The original part of the house is two storeys plus an attic on the right-hand side, facing southeast. The original front features a doorway on the far right with a six-panel door, where the top four panels have been later glazed. This door is set back behind a wooden pedimented doorcase with moulded cornices. To the left of the middle, there is a canted bay with old three-light casements on the ground and first floors, consisting of 12 panes in the middle lights and 6 panes in the sidelights. The left extension has a single window on both the ground and first floors with sash windows. The interior has not been inspected but may contain original 18th-century features similar to those found in No 2. This house is part of an unusual group of 18th-century houses.
