Description

This is a late 18th-century house, situated in the middle of a terrace of three. The exterior is of painted rubble with slate hanging to the ground floor, and 20th-century PVC weatherboarding to the first floor. It has a steep scantle slate roof with brick axial stacks positioned to the left of the middle, over the party wall, and on the right. A hipped two-light roof dormer is located to the right of the middle. The building features a cast iron ogee gutter.

The internal layout comprises two nearly equal reception rooms flanking a cross passage that leads to a central stair hall, with rear service rooms beyond. The house extends over two storeys plus an attic. The front elevation, facing the road, is nearly symmetrical with three windows. The central doorway has a six-panel door set back behind an original wooden doorcase with moulded cornices. Canted bays are located to the right and left, containing old hornless twelve-pane sashes with eight-pane sidelights. On the first floor, the left-hand window has fixed lights or casements with the same number of panes, and above the doorway is a sixteen-pane two-light casement. Original slate hanging to the ground floor on the right suggests that the entire front of numbers 1, 2, and 3 in the terrace was originally slate-hung.

The interior includes an original open-well staircase with a ramped pine handrail, rectangular balusters and turned pendants. Original six-panel and two-panel doors, along with moulded plaster ceiling cornices, are also present in the front rooms. The house is part of an unusual group of 18th-century buildings and remains surprisingly complete.
