Description

The Engineers Shop, originally part of the Perran Iron Foundry group, is a Grade II* listed building located at Perran Wharf in Mylor. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and partially incorporates an earlier structure, possibly from the late 18th century. The building features painted rubble walls with brick arches and wooden lintels, topped with corrugated asbestos and scantle slate roofs that have gable ends and a large stack on the south side.

The overall layout has remained since the 19th century, consisting of a large tapered single-storey working area covered by parallel roofs running east to west. At the east end, there is a rectangular two-storey building with a roof running north to south, and a further rectangular extension, originally the pattern shop, adjoins the middle of the west end.

The machinery in this building was powered by two waterwheels that were turned by water from a leat running parallel to the south, which discharged into the river along the north side. Although the wheels and machinery have been removed, many original openings remain, including wide and narrow doorways and several first-floor window openings, some of which have been covered with PVC sheeting.

Inside, the building retains original roof structures of both king post and queen post types. The Engineers Shop was part of the Perran Iron Foundry, founded in 1791, which was the most significant foundry in Cornwall during its peak, known for manufacturing some of the largest beam engines ever constructed. Despite some superficial 20th-century alterations, this building is a very complete example of 19th-century industrial architecture.
