Description
The Old Manor Mill and Mill Wheel is an early 19th-century watermill, with an addition dating to circa 1860. It is constructed of shale rubble, partially grouted, with granite quoins, slate sills, shallow brick arches, and wooden lintels. The original rear section has a hipped scantle slate roof, while the later front section and a rear lean-to have low-pitched, mostly lean-to roofs. The mill is rectangular, two storeys in height, with a mill wheel situated on the north side. A three-storey mill/warehouse building was added circa 1860, blocking the original front and extending to the right, built into the bank with a leat exit at the rear. The east front has five windows to the first floor, all horned sash windows except the second from the left, which is a fixed light and was formerly a loading door. A large doorway is located on the ground floor to the left, with a smaller doorway adjacent to the right, and two 2-light casements to the far right. Second-floor openings are present at the far left and middle. A roof dormer, formerly over the second bay and linked to the original building behind, has been truncated. The mill wheel has an iron frame, likely manufactured at the Perran Foundry. A mill on this site likely existed prior to the use of water from the Kennal River for the nearby Perran Iron Foundry, which was founded in 1791. The interior has not been inspected.
