Description

No. 38 on Sun Street, also known as No. 38 Teign Street, is a prominent early 19th-century building located at the corner with Sun Lane in Teignmouth. The structure features painted stucco and a slate roof with a chimney stack at the rear, and it has a double-depth plan.

The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window range. To the left, there is a forward-facing gable that includes a 3/6-pane sash window in the attic and an 8/8-pane sash window below it, along with a 20th-century 12-pane window to the right, all beneath plain eaves. The left side has a double-fronted shop with moulded sills and glazing bars at the corners of the plate-glass windows, which flank a 20th-century set-back door with an overlight. The smaller shop front to the right features a 20th-century door.

On the left return in Sun Street, there is a narrow set-back central door with a 3-pane overlight above a blind window. To the left, there are 6/6-pane sash windows on both floors, with blind windows to the right on the first floor.

It is noted that this building was formerly the Rising Sun Inn, which contributed to the naming of Sun Lane. This property is a significant feature in the historic core of Teignmouth.
