Description
The Methodist Church, built in 1849, features a front made of ashlar stone, with the sides constructed from squared coursed masonry accented with ashlar dressings and topped with a slate roof. The building has a large hall and a gable facing the road, with a plain plinth and small octagonal corner turrets that rise to pinnacles above the eaves, one of which retains a foliate top. The front includes a large single gable with copings and a duplicate moulding that follows the slope, topped by a foliate cross at the ridge.
The central porch is supported by small corner buttresses and has a gable with cross gablets at the foot of the coping. It features a pointed moulded doorway flanked by three nook shafts on each side, with a date plaque above. There are three-light lower windows on each side and five-light windows above, all adorned with Decorated tracery. The sides also have two-light windows between the buttresses, featuring ballflower carving in the projecting eaves. A window in the back wall was reset in 1905 in the adjoining church hall.
Inside, there is a lobby beneath a west gallery supported by cast iron pillars. The roof has false hammer-beam trusses with pendentives. A small piece of glass over the porch depicts John Wesley and is believed to date from 1849, while the rest of the colored glass is from a later period. Originally built as Wesley Methodist Chapel, the church closed but was reopened in 1881 after renovations. The church hall and Sunday School are not included in this listing.
