Description
This road marker, located on the north side of Station Road east of the junction with Valley Road, dates from 1897 and is made of cast iron. It features a self-supporting plate that resembles a milestone, measuring approximately 600mm wide, with a semi-circular top, raised rim, and lettering. The inscription reads: 'VR THIS ROAD FOR THE DISTANCE OF 670 YARDS (arrow points to right) WAS MADE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CROWN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE INHABITANTS AND DISTRICT 1897 E STAFFORD HOWARD ESQ COMMISSIONER PHILIP BAYLIS ESQ DEP SUR'. This marker is a very unusual item and is one of four in the parish.
