Description
The road marker, dating from 1898, is made of cast iron and is located against the front wall of 1 Victoria Street in Cinderford. It is a self-supporting plate similar to a milestone, measuring approximately 600mm wide. The marker features a semi-circular head with a raised rim and raised lettering. The inscription reads: 'VR THIS ROAD FOR THE DISTANCE OF 1100 YARDS (arrow points to left) WAS MADE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CROWN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE INHABITANTS AND DISTRICT 1897-8 E STAFFORD HOWARD ESQ COMMISSIONER PHILIP BAYLIS ESQ DEP SUR'. This plaque is quite unusual and is one of four such markers in Cinderford.
