Description
This road marker, dating from 1897, is made of cast iron and is located against the gable of number 36 High Street. It features a self-supporting plate similar to a milestone, measuring approximately 600mm wide, with a semi-circular head, raised rim, and lettering. The inscription reads: 'VR THIS ROAD FOR THE DISTANCE OF 670 YARDS (arrow points to left) WAS MADE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CROWN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE INHABITANTS AND DISTRICT 1897 E STAFFORD HOWARD ESQ COMMISSIONER PHILIP BAYLIS ESQ DEP SUR'. This plaque is quite unusual and is one of four similar markers in Cinderford.
