Description

The Baptist Church, built in 1860, is a prominent landmark located on Commercial Street in Cinderford. The building features three rendered facades with roughly squared rubble sides, complemented by ashlar quoins and window heads. The lower three storeys have similar materials but include brick window dressings, while the upper two storeys are finished with better squared stone and ashlar window dressings. The front has a slate roof, while the rear is covered with concrete tiles.

The church consists of a four-bay chapel that is positioned at right angles to the road and is built across a slope, with a hall located below. Beyond the chapel is a five-storey Sunday School that aligns with the main structure. The main facade showcases a pedimented gable supported by four Doric pilasters with bases, all resting on an ashlar plinth. The central entrance features a door with a moulded surround and a pedimented head, flanked by tall wooden windows and rectangular recesses with recessed panels below. The windows have shouldered heads and marginal lights, with a shorter similar window situated above the door. A large plaque on the gable reads '1860 Baptist Chapel', and there is a scroll on a square block at the base of the gable, which is doubled at the apex.

The side elevations have four windows that resemble those on the front but lack recesses and feature large projecting keystones. Below the chapel floor level, there are plain-headed windows for the hall. The gable copings at the ends of the chapel add to its architectural detail. The five-storey Sunday School block is three windows wide.

Inside, the chapel has a gallery on three sides supported by cast iron columns, with a shaped ornamental cast-iron balustrade. The organ gallery extends into the centre of the schoolroom block, which contains small rooms and vertical-boarded dado panelling throughout, along with various staircases. The original pews in the main part of the chapel have holes for individual communion cups. The Sunday School was likely added in two stages shortly after the chapel's completion in 1860.
