Description

Number 16 is a house located on The Green in Shaldon, dating from the early 19th century with alterations made in the late 19th century. The exterior features incised painted stucco and a slate roof with stacks on the flanking party walls. The house has a double-depth plan with 20th-century additions at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The late 19th-century horned sash windows have two panes over two panes, with the central window on the first floor positioned beneath an eaves band that follows the shape of the full-height, flat-roofed canted bays on either side of the facade. The early 19th-century doorcase includes reeded pilasters, an entablature, and a cornice, leading to a six-panel door that has raised and fielded panels, with glazing at the top and detailed reveals and soffit.

Inside, the early 19th-century staircase features stick balusters, fretted ends, turned newels, and a straight pine handrail. The ground floor has early 19th-century architraves on the six-panel doors, splayed window openings with shutters, and some dado rail in the hall. The room to the right, which was formerly two rooms, includes a moulded cornice, semi-elliptical recesses, and an opening that once held a window with 8/8-pane proportions. The first floor has late 19th-century four-panel doors.

A subsidiary feature of the property is a coped rendered rubblestone wall approximately 2 meters high, which is attached to the right side of the house. This wall reduces in height as it fronts the building and has a long/short railing gate at the center.
