Description

Two houses with a shop, dating from the early 19th century, are located on Fore Street, Shaldon. The buildings are constructed of painted stucco with a continuous slate roof and a rear stack. They have double-depth plans. The exterior is two storeys high; No. 43 has a two-window front, and No. 44 has a three-window front. The first floors feature 6/6-pane sash windows. The ground floor windows on the left of each house are slightly curved, with 10/10-pane sash windows in curved frames; the window to the left of No. 44 has horns. No. 43 has painted rusticated quoins and a 6-panel door to the left, featuring pilasters, an entablature, panelled reveals, and a soffit. No. 44 has a similar doorcase with a reeded lintel, a half-glazed 6-panel door with diagonally-crossed glazing bars to the overlight, a horned 10/10-pane sash window to the left, and a late 19th-century projecting shop front to the right. The shop front has double doors with an overlight to the left of a plate-glass window, set under a fascia with a dentil cornice. The interior was not inspected. This building is of group value.
