Description

Numbers 12 (Rose Cottage), 13, and 14 (Corner Cottage) are three houses built in the early 19th century. They feature painted stucco exteriors and a continuous slate roof with rendered ridge stacks. The buildings have double-depth plans and are two storeys high.

Rose Cottage, which is number 12 and located on the left, has a two-window range. It displays a modillion cornice and 6/6-pane sash windows at the eaves level, above a mid-19th century shop front that steps forward and has small panes, a cornice on the fascia, and a 20th-century door to the right.

Number 13 is in the center and has a symmetrical three-window range, flanked by chamfered rusticated pilasters. It features 20th-century horned 6/6-pane sash windows, with the first-floor windows at eaves level, and shallow single-storey canted bays on either side of a six-panel door that is glazed at the top. This door is set within an early 19th-century doorcase that has pilasters and horizontal diamond shapes on the frieze.

Corner Cottage, number 14, is positioned at a right angle to Fore Street, facing west. It has a hipped slate roof with a stack on the rear left and a three-window range with horned plate-glass sash windows, along with a late 20th-century door.

The interior of the houses has been altered. This terrace, which has seen little alteration, is primarily noted for its contribution to the historic centre of Shaldon.
