Description
Two houses, probably dating from the 18th century, were remodelled and refronted in the early 19th century. They are constructed of painted stucco over cob and rubblestone, with slate roofs and a brick stack to the shared wall between numbers 8 and 9A, and at the rear of number 9A. Each house has a central-entry plan with two principal rooms on the ground floor.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a three-window range to each house. Both houses have late 19th-century sash windows with two oversash and two panes at eaves level. Number 8 has a half-glazed four-panel door, featuring partly-moulded pilasters and a simple entablature. The door to number 9A is simpler and likely dates back to the 18th century. Shallow curved bays flank the party wall on the ground floor; number 8's bay has a lower sill than number 9A's, and both feature sash windows with curved frames and margin panes. The outer ground-floor windows are six-over-six pane sashes. Mid-20th century extensions have been added to the rear.
The interior of number 9A includes an open fire, panelled shutters, and a cupboard to the rear wall below a niche with shaped shelves. The staircase has early 19th-century stick balusters and a turned newel. The wall to the rear of the first floor is of cob construction.
