Description
The Wesleyan Chapel in Shaldon, dated 1867, is a single-storey building constructed of painted stucco with a slate roof and a rectangular plan. The exterior features a symmetrical arrangement with two windows. Pilasters with moulded caps support moulded archivolts with keystones above the openings. The gable ends are enhanced by raised curved quoins and moulded eaves cornices. A circular plaque on the west gable indicates "Wesleyan Chapel 1867." The facade includes two tall semicircular-arched windows with small panes and coloured margin panes, featuring radial glazing bars at the top. Three similar windows on the sides are highlighted by raised panels that extend from the ground and are offset at the imposts of the window arches. The west end is fitted with good 20th-century double oak doors.
Inside, a gallery at the west entrance is supported by slender cast-iron columns, with a planked balustrade that has triangular panels filled in above to create an upper room. At the east end, a wide pulpit designed for multiple preachers is flanked by steps on each side, featuring a wrought-iron scrolled balustrade and a panelled area on the rear wall. The original 19th-century pews are still present.
