Description

The Shaldon War Memorial is a clock tower built in 1921 as a memorial, with later inscriptions added in 1949. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings.

The tower is a square structure in a loose classical style, featuring a chamfered plinth constructed of brick and stone, and a tall, two-stage tower of red brick separated by a moulded string course. A wooden door in the south-west elevation provides access to the clock mechanism. The main (south-east) face of the tower bears an inscription commemorating the end of the First World War, noting the names of those who died for their country, and includes the Latin phrase "DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI." A plaque on the plinth below commemorates those who died in the Second World War, with names appearing on adjacent panels on the north-west and north-east faces. The upper stage of the tower has clock faces on the south-east and north-west elevations, with the remaining two sides being blank. Above a dentilled cornice, the tower is topped with a lead-covered pyramidal roof and a ball finial.

The memorial is raised on a square base with offset stone blocks at the corners, now supporting a later post and chain fence. Later 20th-century metal railings enclose the memorial, but are not part of the listed structure.
