Description

Southwood Cottage is an early 19th-century house located on the north side of The Strand, Shaldon. It is built with painted stucco and has a slate roof, with a large, partly-rendered stack projecting from the right-hand party wall. The house follows a double-depth plan.

The exterior is symmetrical, with a three-window facade. The upper floor has casement windows, likely in original openings. A pediment with moulded coping over the eaves contains a small circular window at its apex. The front entrance is a prostyle timber Tuscan portico with a modillion cornice, sheltering a six-raised-and-fielded-panelled door and overlight, set within panelled reveals and a soffit. Flanking the portico are single-storey, flat-roofed bays, each containing three six/six-pane sash windows.

The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

Attached to the right side of the front of the property is a high brick wall, extending approximately 10 metres forward. This wall meets a lower front wall with a short section of cast-iron railings and gate piers featuring plaster urns.
