Description

Magnolia is a house located on Fore Street in Shaldon, dating from 1750, with remodels around 1810 and in the late 19th century. The building features stucco over red sandstone rubble and cob, topped with a hipped slate roof that has wide eaves supported by brackets and rendered stacks. The original structure has a three-room through-passage plan, although the right-hand range was separated in the late 19th century; it is now all one house.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a three-window range. A painted platband runs across the front, and there is a prostyle Tuscan timber porch, likely original, flanked by early 19th-century shallow segmental bays that cut through the platband and extend just below the eaves. These bays feature curved frames with 10/10-pane sash windows. The door to the right range is accessed from the street via a path that leads behind a late 19th-century cast-iron trellis topped with a segmental-arched cast-iron roof.

Inside, the interior has been altered, but some early 19th-century architraves with roundels at the upper corner blocks remain.
