Description

Poplar Lawn is an early 19th century house, largely remodelled from an earlier, symmetrical 18th century structure, with extensions dating from around 1850-60. The external walls are stuccoed over a timber-framed and cob core, and the roof is slate-covered with stacks positioned to the rear right and right of the building. Originally designed with a three-room through-passage plan, the house incorporates a late 19th century two-storey wing on the right side. The room at the rear left is now part of a neighbouring, unlisted property. The exterior features a symmetrical arrangement with a four-window front. The windows are early 19th century sash windows, with 6-over-6 panes, and 6/9-pane sashes to the ground floor. The original 18th century six-panel door remains, set within a doorcase featuring pilasters, an entablature with a triglyph frieze, and a modillion cornice. Internally, a former open fire can be found on the rear right wall. The house retains an early 19th century closed-string dogleg staircase with a swept swan's neck pine handrail, and splayed panelled shutters to the ground floor. A small 18th century two-panel door leads to the attic, where the original structure of the roof—featuring threaded purlins—is still visible. A boundary wall, approximately 2 metres high, is attached to the front right corner. It extends forward for about 10 metres, turns to the left, and curves towards the front of the house, with pyramidal-capped gate piers positioned centrally along the wall.
