Description

Number 12 is a house located on Gloucester Street in Malmesbury, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with a refronting around 1830. The building is constructed from rendered limestone rubble with limestone dressings, featuring brick stacks at the rear and a stone slate roof. It has a single-depth 18th-century front range, with an early 19th-century west wing and a mid-19th-century east wing, connected by a late 20th-century light well.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical front with a parapet. It features a pedimented doorcase flanked by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature, leading to a recessed 19th-century half-glazed doorway with an overlight, along with a service door on the left. The windows include 6/6-pane sashes and a large horned 3/3-pane sash dormer. The wings have north-facing hips and south-facing gables, with the west wing featuring a west parapet.

Inside, there is a mid-19th-century tiled hall with a staircase that has stick balusters. The rear west wing contains a fine early 19th-century marble fire surround, along with panelled doors and shutters. The property also has attached spear-headed front area railings. Historically, it was noted to have had a wide-arched entrance at the front.
