Description

Gloucester Cottage is a part of an inn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 15th century and has undergone some alterations, including a 20th-century porch added to the west end. The building features limestone rubble and brick on the ground floor, while the first floor is timber-framed, topped with a tiled roof and a brick ridge stack.

The layout consists of a two-room right-angle plan, with the first-floor rooms opening to a roof that has two bays to the north and one bay separated by a closed truss to the south. The cottage stands two storeys high and has a three-window range. There is a doorway in the end gable, and the timber-framed first floor juts out over the brick ground floor. The ground floor has four 20th-century casement windows, while the first floor has three.

Inside, notable features include a well-constructed roof with wind braces in the lower two registers and collar trusses. The southern end of the roof is open, and there is a winder stair at the northern end. The ground floor displays exposed first-floor joists with trimmers for a central stair, as well as quoins and jambs at the ground floor and a blocked west window. The ceiling beams on the ground floor are chamfered and have quirk and tongue stops.

Historically, this building was part of the late 15th-century White Lion Inn located at No. 8 Gloucester Street and was likely used for dormitory and service accommodation, possibly extending to the road front.
