Description
No. 5 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 17th century but has earlier origins and was refronted in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with brick window jambs, and the rear is made of coursed, squared limestone. It features a diagonally-set left-hand stack that is now part of No. 7, and it has a stone slate roof.
The plan consists of a two-room layout with a right-angle design and a central stair on the right side. The exterior is three storeys high with an attic and has a one-window range. The late 19th-century shop front includes panelled jambs, consoles, a fascia, and plate-glass windows. There are 2/2-pane horned sash windows beneath wide timber lintels, and brick jambs with straight joints that infill wider window spaces, along with a gabled casement dormer.
Inside, the building features chamfered stopped beams and plank and muntin panelling that divides the ground and first floors near the winder stair. An early 17th-century right-hand truss with a plated yoke is set in the raised 19th-century attic gable. This building is a notable example of a late 17th-century town house, retaining its original plan form.
