Description

Orchard Cottage is a cottage, likely dating to the 18th century, constructed of limestone rubble and covered by a thatched roof. The plan is approximately 'L' shaped, with single-storey extensions added later.

The cottage is one storey in height with an attic, and has gabled roofs featuring brick ridge and end stacks. The south-facing (garden) elevation has 20th-century casement windows with wooden lintels, with those to the first floor set within eyebrow dormers. Further 20th-century casement windows are located on the ground floor, flanking a rear door. A late 20th-century conservatory, which is of no historical interest, is attached to the right. A single-storey extension was added to the rear, north-east corner in the 20th century. A small porch has been added to accommodate the main entrance. All windows are 20th-century casements.

Internally, original axial bridging beams remain on the ground floor and are variably chamfered; two are joined by a scarf joint. The floor joists are mainly 20th century and machine-sawn. A single wall post, also machine-sawn, supports a bridging beam in the right-hand room, which contains a large inglenook fireplace with a chamfered, cambered bressumer. A late 20th-century spiral staircase leads to the first floor, where sections of wall plate are visible. Broad tie beams survive, some constructed using reused timbers and pegged joints. The principal rafters are substantial and the common rafters are generally hewn from tree branches and over-painted.
