Description
The Old Hall and The Old Hall Cottage is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the 16th century, with alterations from the 17th and 20th centuries. The building features timber framing and brick, with some parts rendered. It has a steeply pitched plain tile roof that includes two ridge stacks and one gable stack. The structure has two storeys, a cellar, and an attic. There is a medieval cellar beneath the central bay, which is said to be unrelated to the current building.
The north front of the house has three bays. The left bay is clad in brick, while the center and right bays are rendered. From left to right, there is a two-light casement window, a three-light casement window, a single light window, a doorway with a 20th-century gabled hood on brackets and a part-glazed door, followed by another two-light casement window. Above these, from left to right, there is a two-light mullion and transom casement, two small two-light windows, and a two-light casement. All of the windows are from the 20th century and have flat arches.
The east gable end wall features a 20th-century porch and casements, as well as shuttered access to the attic. Inside, the building has heavy main beams and joists, with close studding. There is a reused early 17th-century dogleg staircase that has a closed string, turned balusters, a moulded newel with a finial, and a moulded handrail. An earlier survey described the roof as having substantial collars, tie beams, and purlins, with one truss featuring plastered infill and a doorway.
