Description

Court Barton Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with eaves raised and alterations made in the 19th century. It is built of limestone rubble and has a slate roof, with brick stacks located to the left of the center and at the right gable end. The cottage has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two units, with a 19th-century rear wing on the right. It stands two storeys high and features a two-window range. On the first floor, there are two three-light casement windows from around 1980 positioned across the eaves. Below the right window, there is a similar window under a concrete lintel, while to the left of the 20th-century door, there is a hollow-moulded, mullioned four-light window. The door is sheltered by a flat stone porch supported on brackets.

Inside, the cottage has been altered, but it retains an open fireplace with a large Moolham stone lintel that backs onto a central passage. The axial beams in both rooms have run-out chamfers. A 17th-century roof truss beneath the new roof shows blackening on the inner faces, indicating its age. There is also evidence of a timber-framed partition to the left, suggesting that the original 17th-century house extended for another bay in that direction.

Additionally, there are subsidiary features including a late 19th-century brick retaining wall that curves to the right and is attached to the southwest corner at ground level. The property is flanked by widely-spaced railings on Ham Hill stone capping, which surround a central gate made of long and short railings, all topped with cast-iron spearhead finials.
