Description

This is a house located at 14 High Street in Ilminster, dating from the 18th century. It features a Ham Hill stone plinth beneath a render over limestone rubble, topped with a steep pantile roof that has stepped stone coping and a brick stack on the left gable end. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, with a symmetrical two-window range that extends over a passageway to the right. All windows were replaced around 1980 and include forward frames; the ground floor has 2/2-pane sashes, while the first floor has 2-light casements with top vents. The 20th-century planked door, which has strap hinges, is now redundant, with the entrance located in the right return of the passage. Inside, the building has been altered, featuring a mid-19th century staircase at the rear with a turned newel and stick balusters. The attic is now sealed, and the narrow staircase has been removed, but it is said to be fully boarded with wide elm floorboards and has traces of windows in the gable ends. The property is noted for its elm floorboards.
