Description

The Bell Inn is a public house located on High Street in Ilminster, dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of rough Ham Hill stone ashlar, featuring stepped stone coping on the left and brick stacks at the gable ends. The building has a four-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range. The first floor is fitted with 20th-century three-light casements, which are set below a string course.

To the left of the center, there is a 20th-century door that is topped by an open pediment supported by consoles. This door is flanked by 20th-century six-light casements that sit beneath 17th-century label moulds. A window on the far left and a door on the inside-left are both also 20th-century and are positioned under a 20th-century label mould. The plinth of the building is a 20th-century addition with a moulded top.

Inside, the wall on the left gable end is noted to have originally been part of a separate cottage in 1920. There is a fireplace featuring a moulded Tudor-arched Moolham stone lintel, accompanied by a late 17th-century panelled door with cockshead hinges to the left. To the right of the fireplace, there are two cupboards; the upper cupboard has four panels and left-hand hinges, while the lower cupboard has a single raised-and-fielded panel and right-hand hinges.
