Description
This is a medieval shop or warehouse, dating back to the 15th century, situated beneath a pair of houses and a shop. It has a late 17th-century rear range and a mid-19th-century front. The building is constructed of coursed, squared limestone with rubble returns and rear, a party wall, gable stacks, and a slate roof with stone slates to the rear.
The front facade consists of two unequal bays, each of three storeys and a basement, and features a two-window range. Number 20 is narrower, with a 19th-century shop front topped by a cornice, triple 4/4-pane sash windows, and a left-hand door. Above are deeply-set 6/6-pane sash windows. Number 18 has two doorways to the right with rectangular overlights and half-glazed doors, and paired 2/2-pane sash windows on the ground floor, with similar upper sashes. The rear of Number 20 has a gabled range dating from the 17th century, which forms a pair with numbers 28 and 30. This rear section features weathered stonework, carved stone stacks, a first-floor segmental-arched mullion window, and a gabled side dormer.
Internally, Number 20 contains a shallow, vaulted rubble undercroft, accessed by steps from the street, and a 17th-century splayed mullion window at the rear. The undercroft was formerly used as a loop within the town wall, which was incorporated into the walls of numbers 28 and 30. The interior also contains chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and collar trusses.
