Description

The premises on Old Fore Street, occupied by "Ruths," "Charles Wood, Jeweller," "Baskerville House," "Lake's, Plumbers," and "La Boutique," date back to 1633. This early 19th-century row of buildings is two storeys high and features stucco and roughcast finishes, although the ground floor has been significantly altered. The buildings have low-pitched gable end slate roofs with shaped brackets at the eaves. "Baskerville House" is distinguished by flanking pilaster strips and has two windows on the first floor, while "Lake's" has three. The windows are recessed sashes with intact glazing bars, except for "Lake's." The last bay of "La Boutique," which may be slightly older, features a flush-framed sash. "Baskerville House" includes a later 19th-century small canted bay. The ground floor shop fronts have all been modernized, but remnants of the cornice can be seen on "Ruths," "Charles Wood," and "Lake's," with "Lake's" retaining a cornice with shaped brackets. Only "Baskerville House" has preserved its original doorway, which is recessed and consists of six flush panels, four of which are glazed, with panelled reveals and a roughcast surround topped by a cornice. The listed buildings on the west side of Old Fore Street form a group.
