Description

Lordsmead Mill is a building that originally served as a flax and later a silk mill, and it has now been converted into a house. It dates from the early 19th century or late 18th century. The main section of the mill is constructed from coursed and squared limestone and features a slate roof. To the right, there is a smaller section that is lower in height, with a tile-covered mansard roof and horizontal boarding in the upper part of the gable.

The main building has eight bays and includes 36-pane sash windows on two floors. The north front, which is the entrance side, has a six-panel door in the fifth bay and a pair of plank doors in the eighth bay. The smaller section to the right has a loading bay door with a segmental head, and the return gable features a two-light casement window just below the boarding. The south front mirrors the north front with its eight bays and 36-pane sash windows, along with 20th-century glazed doors in the third bay and front doors in the eighth bay. All windows are set beneath keyed lintels.

The interior has been completely modified for domestic use, and many of the windows have been replaced. Despite these changes, it remains a splendid building that exemplifies the best of functional architectural tradition.
