Description
High Mill is a late 18th-century mill, built primarily for cotton and worsted manufacture, later used as a silk mill. It incorporates an earlier 17th-century corn mill to the north, which is now unoccupied. The building is constructed of rubble brought to course, with dressed quoins, and has a stone slate roof. It has three storeys, a basement, and an attic. The river-facing side has 15 bays of windows with plain stone surrounds. The rear elevation has 10 bays of windows, with quoins visible between the 7th and 8th bays. A wing projects forward at the northern end; this is of later 19th-century design and less significant. The left-hand return wall features a segmental arch for a tail-goit, while the right-hand return wall has a segmental-arched entry for a mill race. Windows on this return wall have monolithic lintels and sills. It is believed that the mill originally had two waterwheels, one of which was in use until 1919.
