Description

Numbers 2 (Fir Cottage), 4 (Dale Cottage), and 6 are a house and two cottages located in Addingham, built in 1677 and later extended and altered in the mid-18th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed rubble with dressed quoins and have a stone slate roof. They are two storeys high and originally comprised a two-cell house.

Number 2 features double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals, including a two-light fire-window and a six-light window with a king mullion. The doorway has composite jambs, a chamfered surround, and a dated lintel. The first floor has both two-light and three-light windows. Number 4 has a mid-20th century porch that obscures an inserted 18th-century doorway, located to the left of a two-light flat-faced mullioned window, with a similar window above it featuring a slightly recessed mullion. Number 6, which is an added cell to the west, has a single-light window on each floor with dressed lintels and sills. The doorway for Number 6 is at the rear and has monolithic jambs, with similar windows to the front. The buildings have coped gables with kneelers and stacks, along with one additional stack on the ridge.

Inside, the housebody features a scarf-jointed spine beam, evidence of a former bressumer and firehood, and a corresponding break in the ridge. The floor joists are stop-chamfered. There is an unusual queen-post truss with a cambered collar, from which a short king post rises with a convex brace to the ridge.
