Description
The Old Malt Kiln is a malt house, now functioning as an art gallery and workshops, likely built in the early 19th century. It features rubble brought to course, dressed quoins, and a stone slate roof. The building consists of two ranges with parallel ridges that form an L-shape. It has two storeys and a basement, with five windows on the first floor. The main entrance has a doorway with monolithic jambs, which is accessed by a flight of steps. The first-floor windows are sashed with tie-stone jambs. There is also a doorway leading down to the basement at the junction with the wing. The rear of the building includes basement windows with deep inner chamfers.
Inside, the basement contains large spine beams supported by squared pillars, along with a malt kiln that has a vaulted roof and is square in plan. The main room, which now serves as a gallery, features stop-chamfered spine beams, while the workshop has a fish-bone king-post roof.
