Description
Nos 10, 12, 14 and 16 The Rookery on Bolton Road is a row of eight back-to-back cottages that have been converted into four through houses, dating from the late 18th century. The building features watershot masonry with dressed quoins and a stone slate roof, rising to two storeys. There are four first-floor windows and paired doorways with tie-stone jambs. Some original windows have plain stone surrounds, but most have been widened and altered. The rear of the building has been significantly changed, with segmental bow windows added around 1980, which are not in keeping with the original style; only the doorways remain from the original design. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there are two stacks, along with the remnants of a gable stack facing the road. Together with Nos 36 to 42 (even), this building forms a pair of early back-to-back working-class terraces and is included for its group value.
