Description

The Grange is a large house, dating to the 16th century, and significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It stands at the back pavement edge and is now divided into two separate residences. The construction is primarily of small squared coursed rubble with some large flush greensand quoins, and has a tile roof, likely replacing original stone slates. The building is complex and somewhat unusual in layout, consisting of a long, narrow block with gabled extensions to the left and a projecting section to the street front on the right. This projecting section may have originally been a large stack. The street front has a 1:4:1 window arrangement. The ground floor windows are 2-light openings with transoms, while the first floor has 2-light casements with glazing bars, mainly from the 20th century. The projecting bay features a 3-light window on each floor. To the far right, a small 20th-century window sits above a recessed doorway with a plank door and overlight in a segmental opening, approached by three steps. A 20th-century porch covers a good flush 6-panel door, set off-centre to the left, and to the far left is another 20th-century 6-panel door with an overlight beneath a 2-light window. This end bay is slightly stepped forward and set at an angle to the main structure. The left return includes various openings and a gabled wing. The rear elevation features 2+3 windows, all 20th-century casements and a large French window, a large brick gable, and one dormer window. The interior of one section (No 2) includes original features, such as a 16th-century moulded and stopped beam in the through passage and a section of roof with pegged A-frame construction, displaying 2 chamfered and stopped purlins and wind bracing. A Victorian staircase is also present.
