Description
Downlease is a row of three cottages, now functioning as a single property, dating from the 18th century with a 19th-century roof and modifications. The first cottage is constructed from rubble, featuring a gable wall made of rat-trap bond brickwork. The remaining cottages have a front wall of small squared and coursed stone, with rubble elsewhere, all topped with a plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high with a total of six windows; the ground floor windows are all boarded up, but are presumed to have been 2 or 3-light casements with wood lintels. On the first floor, there are two 4-pane sash windows with horns, a single 3-light casement with glazing bars, followed by a stretch of plain walling, then a 3-light casement with glazing bars and a 6-pane sash window with horns.
The central door of the left cottage is a 4-panel 19th-century door beneath a small transom light, while the middle block features a vertical plank door. To the right, beyond a straight joint in the walling, is another 4-panel door with a transom light. The building has three brick ridge stacks, with one on the right gable and the other two originally serving as gable stacks for the earliest cottage. There is a cropped stack on the left gable, which also shows a lower roof line. The back of the building is painted and has three doors along with scattered casements. The interior is currently unused and inaccessible. This structure likely represents a restructuring of an earlier building, as there are indications of a stone-mullioned window above the central doorway.
