Description
The entrance way to Dewes House is a 18th-century wall with a doorway located at the back of the pavement on Salisbury Street in Mere. It is constructed of rough coursed and squared limestone with ashlar dressings. The wall measures about 2 meters in length and rises to a height of approximately 3 meters, featuring a stone coping that sweeps down to the left. At the top, there are two moulded flat pyramidal cappings. The doorway is roughly central and includes two stone steps leading up to the courtyard entry, framed by plain pilasters and a flat elliptical arch with a projecting keystone. This entrance way is adjacent to the Quaker Meeting House and shares similar detailing, although it is a separate construction. The wall plays an important role in maintaining the continuity of the street and encloses the frontage of Dewes House.
