ST 8032-8132 MERE SALISBURY STREET (south side) 6/62 Gateway and walls to Courtyard Cottage

GV II

Broad arched gateway with flanking walls. Late C18 or C19. Coursed rough- dressed limestone with ashlar trimmings to opening. A wide elliptical opening to piers with plain imposts, central projecting and dropped keystone, to pair of C20 iron gates. Wall rises above arch to tiled coping and raised pier 'caps'; to left a wall segment at same height as central wall returns to pavement, with stone coping; right similar, plus c.3 m plain wall connecting to Dewes Lodge (qv) and under flat roof. Overall width at pavement c 6 metres. Important to street, and echoing similar openings to Dewes House (qv) and Friends' Meeting House (qv). Courtyard Cottage not included in this list.
