Description

The gateway and walls to Courtyard Cottage date from the late 18th century or 19th century. The structure features a broad arched gateway flanked by walls made of coursed rough-dressed limestone, with ashlar trimmings around the opening. The gateway has a wide elliptical opening supported by piers that include plain imposts, a central projecting element, and a dropped keystone, leading to a pair of 20th-century iron gates. The wall rises above the arch to a tiled coping and raised pier caps. To the left, a segment of the wall is at the same height as the central wall and returns to the pavement with stone coping. On the right, there is a similar wall, plus a plain wall about 3 meters long connecting to Dewes Lodge, which is covered by a flat roof. The overall width at the pavement is approximately 6 meters. This gateway is significant to the street and resembles similar openings found at Dewes House and the Friends' Meeting House. Courtyard Cottage itself is not included in this listing.
